I posted a link to another story about this published a different media source. Because the issue is so important to me, I'm posting the Rolling Stone story about the republican hopes or plans to decimate a whole bunch of our public lands. Here's the story, in full:

Every Summer, my wife and I pack up our three kids and the family dog and drive an hour-and-a-half from our home in Portland, Oregon, to the forested shores of Timothy Lake for a camping trip. The lake is technically a reservoir — with a small dam at the western edge. But it is a gem, bordered by U.S. Forest Service land on three sides.

The federal land surrounding this awe-inspiring place would be put on the auction block for developers under the Senate’s version of President Donald Trump’s tax-cut-and-spending legislation known as the “Big Beautiful Bill.” A provision unveiled this week would open nearly 250 million acres of public lands in the West, for sale to the highest bidder. The legislation would require that at least 3 million acres — an area about half the size of Vermont — be privatized in the next five years. 

The ugly provision was introduced by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, chaired by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), who recently made himself notorious for shitposting about a political assasination in Minnesota. Lee’s committee touts this “mandatory disposal��� of federal lands as a way to “fulfill President Trump’s agenda” by “unlocking federal land” to “increase the supply of housing,” while generating at least $5 billion. Speaking to fellow conspiratorial loon Glenn Beck, Lee defended the initiative as a “common-sense solution to a national problem.” Lee’s provision has the support of The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board which alleges that “Uncle Sam” is “typically a poor steward of the land.”

This Senate provision creates a direct conflict with the House version of the Big Beautiful Bill. Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Mont.) successfully fought to strip a similar provision from the House bill. The former Interior Secretary described privatization of public lands as his “red line,” noting: “Once the land is sold, we will never get it back. God isn’t creating more land.”

The Senate provision applies to 11 western states, but notably exempts Montana. If this was meant to appease Zinke, he is not impressed. The congressman posted on X on June 18: “I have said from day one I would not support a bill that sells public lands. I am still a no on the Senate reconciliation bill that sells public lands.” Environmental groups are sounding the alarm, with 113 organizations — including the Sierra Club and Scenic Utah — writing an open letter to Senate leadership warning that the lack of meaningful restrictions in the provision would open sold-off public lands for development as “golf courses, luxury resorts, strip malls, [or] private vacation homes.” 

The Wilderness Society decries the Senate provision, insisting it would spark “the largest single sale of national public lands in modern history” and sacrifice “ordinary Americans’ access to outdoor recreation for a short-term payoff.” It has produced a map of federal lands that would be available to private developers under this land grab. The group writes that the provision “masquerades as a way to provide more housing, but it lacks safeguards to ensure land is used for that purpose.” It nominally requires consultation with the states and calls for an exclusion of lands with “valid existing rights” — a provision that appears to apply to extractive industries like mining and drilling. (According to the map, my family’s go-to campground at Timothy Lake could be sold off for lakefront villas.) 

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) has called the proposal “insane” and a “non-starter,” adding: “Hell no.” Democrats are calling on citizens to fight for their treasured public spaces. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) is the ranking Democrat on the Senate committee that Lee chairs. “Our public lands hold our shared identity: They are where we gather, fish, hunt, and hike,” he writes. “We can’t let Republicans take them from us.”

He adds a battle cry to voters: “Now is the time to raise your voices and join our fight to keep public lands in public hands — before we lose these lands forever.”

Selling off common lands is wildly unpopular. In a recent poll, 71 percent of American adults oppose selling public lands to the highest bidder. Only 16 percent of Trump voters support such a move. 

According to an inventory of public lands compiled by the Wilderness Society, the states most at risk are Alaska, where nearly 80 million acres would be up for grabs, followed by Nevada with 34 million acres, and Idaho and Oregon with 21 million acres apiece. In Lee’s home state of Utah, nearly 19 million acres would be on the block for land speculators.

sometimes, they sell really cute bandages at jc pharmacy in lumina square. while shopping for the girls with lighter, you decided to pick those up too, mainly just because they're cute. while lighter does some extra shopping, you decided to look at the stationery section. seeing all of the different sticker designs, animals, bangboos, galaxy, etc. a certain idea pops into your head.

after being able to convince him to let you tie a bow around his bicep, he was basically a flustered mess to even stop you from doing anything more. so while he was playing with the ribbon in his fingers, you seized the opportunity by placing a sticker right on the edge of his shoulder scar.

"and what's this?" his other hand went to feel the little bandage you placed on him. for how large his scar is, something this small would never be able to patch it up.

“it’s cute, and you seem like you need it,” you chirped, carefully peeling off a sticker from its backing and placing it on his chest. he didn’t need a bandage, his scar was healed somewhat, but the feel of your fingers on his skin sent shivers down his spine.

he’s the red scarf of the sons of calydon and he’s letting you place cat stickers on him like it was nothing. “i’m not some sort of cutie you can just, decorate whenever you like,” he protested but didn’t even make an effort to remove them from his body. he doesn’t want to seem like a softie, this was ruining his cool guy personality.

you didn’t really mind what he had to say, still continuing to stick bangboos on him now. if you weren’t going to stop, at the very least he could seem a little more angry (he can’t get angry at you doing something so silly). with a cross of his arms and his head turned, he effectively stopped you from placing anymore on his body.

however, he just opened himself up to even more opportunities. a quick little kiss on his cheek then a sticker to seal it in place had him staring wide eyed at you. he didn’t really think you would be THAT bold but the blush on your cheeks made it obvious to him that you were just as flustered by your own actions as him.

the red on his face was double yours though and he’d try to say something about it but it just comes out as stutters and half completed sentences. he loosens up, pushing up his sunglasses. if he’s getting your affection in such a… stupidly silly but cute way, maybe it’s not so bad to be covered in stickers and bandages…

it’s wild to me that like every modern adaptation of Sherlock Holmes (and by modern I mean “made recently” not “set in modern times”) is like Hell Bent on coming up with a Reason™️ that Watson stays with Holmes and trots around with him on adventures all the time despite the inconvenience and the danger and all, and so it’s like “oh, Watson’s a gambling addict, he loves uncertainty and mystery” or “oh, Watson’s an adrenaline junkie, he gets off on being constantly in danger from criminals” or even like “Watson’s atoning for sins of the past of BEING IN THE WAR by solving crimes with Holmes now” or WHATEVER. And it’s like, girl, maybe he’s just in love! Did you think of that?? Maybe he’s got a crush and it’s making him do stupid things. Maybe he’s just got bad taste and his type is guys who don’t know how to refold newspapers properly but can identify different types of cigar ash by sight, smell, and taste. The Missing Radio Tower post had an update so it’s going around again and my mentions are unusable (it’s fine), so I’m not necessarily seeing what people are saying. About anything. My queue is half-tagged and I’m going back as things post and putting tags in. We are in the home stretch towards getting the pain block for my herniated disc, which will be on Monday, and I’m sleeping a lot.

Tomorrow I have TWO doctor consults, one of which I had forgotten until I got an email reminder. I’m nervous that my new surgeon will either say “You need surgery” (bad!!!!), or he will say, “You don’t need surgery and you’re already seeing a spinal pain clinic, why are you wasting my time,” and I will get a bad grade in seeing doctors.

(He looks friendly on the hospital website though. He’s actually the one who replaced my original surgeon, who left a few years back, which I am never getting over because I loved him. THANKS CHICAGO.)

I’ll write up the results of tomorrow’s visits (after resting a bit, I’m sure), and probably put that on the Patreon. Anyway, this is an update on me, since I have some new folks coming in from the Missing Tower post and probably the political ones as well, and my pinned post indicates that I actually write things now and then. Yeahhhh, I’m currently writing only on my phone because I can’t sit up to use a laptop. We persevere.

My little sister (3 yrs old) saw a mothers day video of this where the kid was making cakes and setting up decorations. she was so amazed—because a kid younger than her could do this stuff .

Then she went to our mom, showed her the video and, in absolute seriousness, said, "Mama, buy this baby"
